There are scenic highways in Florida that are worth a road trip. Route 1 down through the Keys is my favorite, traveling over 100 miles from Key Largo to Key West. But I found a shorter trip in the Panhandle to offer plenty of sightseeing and some great spots to pull over and take in beautiful beaches, state parks, and shopping I’m talking about Scenic Highway 30A, running between Destin and Panama City. It’s only about 25 miles long, but it has lots to offer. To start with......

Daytona Beach is one of Florida’s most popular beaches on the Atlantic coast. It proudly proclaims it is "The World's Most Famous Beach". And it has lots to offer for visitors year-round, but particularly in the fall. The fall brings a comfortable heat index, fewer crowds, and lower hotel rates....

If you’re into having no tan lines and letting it all hang out, Florida has some beaches for you. There are four official nude beaches in the state, and several others that are semi-official....

When it comes to data, nobody crunches more data than Google. The search engine giant recently mined its databases looking for the calmest beaches in the U.S., as mentioned by its users. It turns out six of the top ten beaches in the country are in Florida, starting with the top four....

The Lodge at Flamingo! Enjoy The Everglades In Air Conditioned Comfort! Let’s face it! The Everglades can be a hot, sticky mess even in the winter. If you want to kick back and get cool after a day of exploring there is a relatively new option for you. The Flamingo Lodge in the Everglades, opened in 2023, years after the previous lodge was destroyed by hurricanes. Flamingo Lodge has 24 air-conditioned units right on the shores of Florida Bay, right where the park road ends. All the units are located on the second floor, with shaded parking underneath. The buildings are all artfully made out of recycled shipping containers....

Naples, Florida, has the reputation for being a pricey place to visit. A night at the Ritz Carlton on the beach can set you back $400 and up, in the off season. But some parts of Naples are remarkably affordable…particularly the area known as Old Naples. Old Naples is generally the south side of town, the area where the community first got its start back over a century ago. There are no hard boundary lines, but if you drive out Central Avenue toward the beach and make a left turn on any side streets, you’re in Old Naples....

Quietly nestled in southwest Florida is the growing travel and adventure destination of Charlotte County, and its hub city of Punta Gorda. Punta Gorda sits along the Peace River at the confluence with Charlotte Harbor. With all that water it’s a prime spot for boating, fishing, and water sports....

From a strictly touristy point of view, Cocoa Beach is “the” place to go on Central Florida’s Space Coast. Cocoa Beach is the closest beach to Orlando, only about an hour’s drive on the “Beachline” toll road. In no time at all you have your toes in the sand.  Cocoa Beach is a popular day-trip for tourists at the Orlando area theme parks. What once was a mainly winter getaway, the beach town is now busy year-round. ...

The drive between Miami and Naples, Florida, is about 115 miles, and you can make the trip in a couple hours. But don’t rush things. The highway takes you through the heart of the Everglades and Big Cypress Preserve. This is a trip that offers unique and historical attractions that you want to stop and absorb. The drive is along U.S. 41, otherwise known as Tamiami Trail, and for long-time Floridians it is known as the original Alligator Alley. Much of the trip is two-lane highway with limited passing opportunities. So slow down and enjoy....

For a little more than 100 miles you island hop your way along the historic Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West. The highway was originally Henry Flagler’s railroad line that carried freight and passengers to Key West, which at the time was a major seaport.  If you push it, you can do this trip in less than one day. But don’t! There is so much to see and experience along the way. ...

Dunedin, Florida is a small town in north Tampa Bay with a big reputation as a place to go for great weekend getaways. The town has a lot going for it. There is a LBGTQ nightclub. On top of that the downtown area has a host of fine restaurants....

No trip to St. Augustine Florida is complete without a visit to the St. Augustine Lighthouse. The original lighthouse was the first ever built in Florida, built in 1824. It was replaced in 1874 by a taller lighthouse that was located a short distance away, to avoid erosion problems. The tower is 165 feet tall, and sturdy, having survived three earthquakes in the late 1800’s. The original Fresnel lens is still used today....

Nine Amazing Historical Attractions On Amelia Island Other than Saint Augustine, no place in Florida has a deeper history than Amelia Island. The French came ashore in 1562, and quickly displaced the native Timucuan Indians, who had occupied the island for hundreds of years. The French didn’t last long. Spain gained control of the island in 1565, setting off a tumultuous history with the island being governed under eight flags over the years. The United States finally claimed the island in a deal with Spain in 1821. The......

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse is one of the oldest lights on the Florida coast. The original light was built in 1848, and stood 65 feet tall. It was abandoned a year later during a Seminole Indian uprising. When the threat passed the blinking white light was put back in operation until the Civil War, when it was ordered dark by the Confederate government. After the war, in 1868, a new tower, 151 feet tall, was built out of cast iron and bricks. This is the......
