01 Jul Florida Caverns State Park: Florida’s Underground Natural Wonder
Nestled in the rolling hills of Florida’s Panhandle, Florida Caverns State Park offers visitors an experience unlike any other in the Sunshine State. While Florida is famous for its beaches, crystal-clear springs, and tropical landscapes, few people realize that it is also home to spectacular limestone caves. Located just outside the city of Marianna, this remarkable state park invites guests to explore a fascinating underground world filled with stunning rock formations, rich history, and abundant wildlife.
Exploring The Caverns
The park’s most popular attraction is its guided cave tour. Visitors descend into cool, naturally air-conditioned chambers where temperatures remain around 65 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. Knowledgeable park rangers and guides lead guests through illuminated passageways while explaining the geological processes responsible for creating the caverns. Along the way, visitors marvel at towering columns, sparkling calcite deposits, and uniquely shaped formations that have inspired imaginative names over the decades.
The guided tour typically lasts about 45 minutes and provides an educational adventure suitable for families, students, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
A caution note:
Many of the passageways in the cave system have very low ceilings. Watch your head!
And always remember, Stalactites grow down from the ceiling. Stalacmites grow up from the floor.
